Berkshire Eagle -
GRANBY — Over at Westover Golf Course the Western Massachusetts Girls Golf Tournament had no escape from a pair of Lenox standouts.
Katie Shove and Mia Freeman took first and second, respectively, with Shove's 5-over par 77 just barely enough to beat Freeman's 78 and give Shove the Western Mass. Championship, while Freeman took home silver. Easthampton's Amelia Gruber was third with an 80.
Both Shove and Freeman were tied at 38 after the front nine. Both birdied on the par-4 fourth hole while Shove also birdied on the par-3 eighth. On the back nine, Freeman began with a bogey but then had five pars in six holes, including three straight and finished with a 40 to make her score of 78.
But Shove stroked a birdie on No. 10 and while she double bogeyed No. 14, four more pars were enough to tough out a 39 and the title.
"Both girls played fantastic," wrote coach Mark Gilligan.
