On Wednesday, January 18th, the junior class partook in a panel discussion exploring the relationship between policing and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Professionals from our community led the discussion: Chief Wynn – Pittsfield PD, Lt. Traversa – Pittsfield PD, Professor Stacy Evans – BCC, Professor Charles Park – BCC, Chief O’Brien – Lenox PD, Officer Colvin – Lenox PD, Shirley Edgartown – Cultural Competency Coach for the Pittsfield School District, and Dennis Powell – President of the NAACP Berkshire Branch. Students were able to think critically about a complex issue that has its roots in history, but that continues to impact today. Additionally, students were witness to adult collaboration and conversation about what is often perceived as a divisive topic. The organization of the event was all student led including contacting presenters, organizing lunch and providing questions for the panel. Thanks also to Ms. Porter for supervising the group’s progress.
Congratulations to the student leaders that made this happen!
