Jomo Kenyatta would remain as president of Kenya until 1978 when he would die at the age of eighty-six (Maathai 156)

President Daniel arap Moi

As Vice-President, Moi would succeed him in office after running unopposed for reelection. According to Wangari Maathai, he would consolidate power quickly and use repressive measures to block opposition to his rule. Maathai has attested to this abuse of power in her autobiography, Unbowed, where she recounts her experiences as the founder of the Green Belt Movement. Moi was later to foil an attempted coup d'etat and hang the leaders in the last state-sponsored execution in Kenyan history. Furthermore, in 1990 he was implicated in the Goldenberg Scandal where considerable amounts of gold were exported which cost the nation of Kenya about 10% of its Gross National Product. Lastly, he has been cited by Amnesty International and the United Nations for numerous human rights abuses. Some of these abuses have been underlined by Maathai in her autobiography.
