Literacy is Fun at Morris!

Throughout the month of March, students and staff are participating in fun literacy events.  On March 3rd the students watched an incredible literacy-themed performance by Robert Rivest who is a professional mime and performance artist.  On March 10 students came to Morris dressed as their favorite storybook character.  On March 17, students wore green and participated in green or Irish-themed literacy activities.  On March 23 there will be a Books Before Bed literacy night for students and parents.  We will cap off our month on March 31 with a Wonderful World Of Words celebration of vocabulary.

In addition to these school-wide activities, our ELA curriculum specialist, Amanda Hanlin-Hochler, organized a “Raising Readers” workshop for Kindergarteners and their parents.  Parents met with Mrs. Hanlin-Hochler to learn about strategies for supporting early readers at home.  They then went to their child’s classroom to hear the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”  Parents and their children returned to the cafeteria to create a story re-telling craft to go along with the story.  It’s always fun to watch parents working and learning with their kids!
