We at LMMHS believe the internet to be a very useful tool for both Academic and personal enrichment. We support it's use and it's growth. However, just as with any powerful tool, the proper guards and procedures must be in place to keep everyone safe.
What are the risks?
Exposure to inappropriate material
Sexual solicitation and molestation
Harassment and bullying
Theft of personal information
Fraud victimization
Exposure to untrue and misleading information
Exposure to unwanted advertisements and spam
Involvement in criminal activity – illicit activities
Unwanted viruses, spyware, malware and hackers jeopardizing family privacy and safety
At the school we use the following tools to ensure your childs safety while here:
Technical:
We use a St. Bernard Iprism that monitors and filters all computer traffic going out of the building. This particular system provides a teacher override functionality, this allows us to be a bit more aggressive in filtering as a teacher may override a legitimate site that was blocked by tighter controls.
Students are provided with a school email account that can email to and from the internet but they are not allowed to login to other email sites from school. Parents may request that thier child not recieve internet email by contacting the Technology Coordinator @ 637-5560.
All Instant Messaging and internet file sharing protocols and sites are disabled
Procedural:
All Teachers and Library staff perform “Over the shoulder” monitoring. They are never shy about looking over a students shoulder to see what they are doing online and to ask them questions about what they see. We also perform a weekly scan of the internet logs with particular attention to encrypted web traffic.
