Superintendent Search

The Lenox School Committee invites outstanding educators to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools. The successful candidate is expected to build upon the many strengths of the system, respecting the participatory roles of parents and staff in the educational process, but bringing a personal vision of excellence to the community.

Because the Lenox School Committee is committed to the continuous improvement of its educational program, the new Superintendent must have an outstanding background in promoting academic excellence. Experience with, or interest in, district curricular alignment is desirable. He or she must possess the attributes and personal demeanor to work comfortably in a small, close-knit community where interpersonal skills are equally as important as professional knowledge in establishing and achieving goals of the school system.

The position requires a year-round commitment to the needs of the schools. The Lenox School Committee will offer a one-year interim contract with a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Lenox School Committee may make this position permanent with a multi-year contract at any point during the interim period.

 

The Community

Located in the scenic Berkshires of western Massachusetts, the town of Lenox has 4,836 residents. A world-class cultural center with famous museums, art and antique galleries, artisans and nationally acclaimed restaurants and resorts, Lenox is also the site of Tanglewood, the summer home of the internationally renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as nationally-acclaimed Shakespeare & Company. Tourism plays a prominent economic role in supporting a modest commercial base.

Recreational opportunities such as canoeing, fishing, hiking and cycling add to the richness of year-round living.

 

The Schools

The Superintendent serves 315 students enrolled in the Pre-K to grade 5 Morris Elementary School and 440 students in the grade 6-12 comprehensive middle and high school. The small size of Lenox schools has been a distinct advantage in providing a personalized academic experience for all students. Both schools are defined as high-performing according to statewide student assessment standards.  Ninety per cent of high school graduates in 2017 went on to higher education at two- and four-year colleges, and the dropout rate at Lenox High School is typically less than one percent.

The Morris Elementary School was awarded National Blue Ribbon School status in 2016; the Lenox Memorial Middle and High School was named a Gold Medal School by US News and World Report in both 2016 and 2017. Lenox is justifiably proud of all the accomplishments of its students and faculty and looks to continue at this high level of excellence.

 

Application Procedure

Interested candidates should respond in writing and submit the following:

  • A letter of interest stating personal qualifications, reasons for interest in this position, and how the applicant’s previous experience aligns with expectations of the Lenox School Committee.
  • A current resume.
  • College/university academic transcripts indicating degrees earned.
  • At least three, but not more than five, current letters of recommendation.
  • Verification that the candidate holds, or will be qualified to hold by the expected employment date, a Massachusetts license as a Superintendent.

All application materials should be received by May 7, 2018.  Selection of the Interim Superintendent is anticipated by early June, and the starting date will be on or about July 1, 2018.
